This act of violent misogyny shook our country and led Parliament to designate December 6 as The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. \nOn December 6\, we remember: \n\nGeneviève Bergeron\nHélène Colgan\nNathalie Croteau\nBarbara Daigneault\nAnne-Marie Edward\nMaud Haviernick\nMaryse Laganière\nMaryse Leclair\nAnne-Marie Lemay\nSonia Pelletier\nMichèle Richard\nAnnie St-Arneault\nAnnie Turcotte\nBarbara Klucznik-Widajewicz\n\nAs we mourn their loss and remember their lives\, we reaffirm our commitment to fight the hatred that led to this tragedy\, and the misogyny that still exists today. In Canada and around the world\, women\, girls\, 2SLGBTQQIA+ (two-spirit\, lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender\, queer\, questioning\, intersex\, asexual\, plus) and gender diverse individuals face unacceptable violence and discrimination. Gender-based violence in Canada has been magnified and amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic. There have been reports from police services\, shelters\, and local organization of an increase in calls related to gender-based violence across Canada during the pandemic. \nThe National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women is about remembering those who have experienced gender-based violence and those who we have lost to it. It is also a time to take action. Achieving a Canada free from gender-based violence requires everyone living in this country to educate themselves and their families and communities on gender-based violence\, centre the voices of survivors in our actions and speak up against harmful behaviours. This date was selected to honour the Mirabal sisters\, three political activists from the Dominican Republic who were brutally murdered in 1960 by order of the country’s ruler\, Rafael Trujillo (1930-1961). \nOn 20 December 1993\, the General Assembly adopts the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women through resolution 48/104\, paving the path towards eradicating violence against women and girls worldwide. \nFinally\, on 7 February 2000\, the General Assembly adopts resolution 54/134\, officially designating 25 November as the International day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and in doing so\, inviting governments\, international organizations as well as NGOs to join together and organize activities designed to raise public awareness of the issue every year on that date.
